They Often Come Back

Well it is that time of the week, time for me to put fingers to keyboard and share with you something about the Self Storage Business.

Did I ever tell you what prompted me to be a part of the Self Storage Business?  I am actually retired.

About 3 or 4 years ago, just like many of you we had a bit of a crises happening in my family.  My daughter was in the middle of a divorce and we were concerned with, where she would live.  She and her husband had bought a nice little house with the intention of starting their lives together.  The house needed work, and they were planning to make improvements and turn it into a nice home.  Unfortunately things did not work out.  But never-the-less I was given the opportunity to purchase the house, which I did.  Of course as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished and about 4 months after I purchased the house, for the first time in my life I was out of work.  To make a long story somewhat shorter, after a year I decided to make the necessary repairs and improvement myself to the house and sell it.  The repairs took most of the spring and early summer, and I did sell the house.

The next issue was what should we do with all of the furniture in the house?  I wanted to just get rid of it.  The wife and daughter said let’s put it in my house, and once we quickly ran out of room, the next solution was to get a storage space.   We did and quickly filled it.   Then we got another, and another.

I am sure you can see where this is going.  Your right!!!!!

Well as time went by we continued to have the units, and one day when I went up to the office to pay the bill, I asked if they were hiring?  (I was now retired)  I have no idea why, but they hired me to manage one of their facilities .

The reason I am telling you this story is because a short while ago, I had a couple stop by.  I showed them a couple of different sized units, and they decided that a 5 x 10 sized unit would be something they might need.  They asked a few questions and were not sure when they wanted to rent the unit.  They also said that they were going to check prices with other competitors in the area.  I went on to explain that we price our units competitively and are confident that they would come back when they decide to rent a unit.  I also reminded them that our tenants have 24 hour access which is something that our competitors cannot offer.  As they were about to leave they shared with me that they are considering the unit because their son was coming back to live with them and it was his furniture that they would be storing, if they decide to rent.  One of their parting comments was that the kids always seem to come back.  I teased them, saying that they should have downsized when he originally left.  They said that they did………
